The theory test is the written exam component of the Thai driver's license application. It is taken on a computer at the DLT office and is available in English. With the right preparation it is very manageable — here is everything you need to know.
The Format
Questions: 50 multiple choice questions
Time: 1 hour
Passing score: 45 out of 50 correct (90%)
Language: Available in English, Thai and several other languages
System: Computerised e-Exam system at the DLT office
What the Test Covers
- Traffic laws and regulations — speed limits, right of way, overtaking rules, parking rules
- Road signs — regulatory signs, warning signs, information signs, guide signs and road markings
- Safe driving practices — following distances, night driving, driving in rain, blind spots
- Road etiquette — lane discipline, signalling, pedestrian right of way
- Emergency procedures — what to do in an accident, emergency numbers, first aid basics
- Vehicle regulations — registration requirements, insurance, licence types
Tips for Passing
- Use the official DLT question bank — the test draws from a published set of questions. Practising with these directly is the most efficient preparation.
- Read every question carefully — some questions are phrased in ways that trip up readers who skim quickly.
- Road signs are heavily featured — make sure you know the Thai regulatory, warning and information signs before sitting the exam. Many look similar and the differences matter.
- Don't overthink it — the vast majority of questions are common sense driving knowledge. Most applicants with driving experience pass on their first attempt.
If You Fail
You can typically retake the theory exam the following day at the same DLT office. There is a small additional fee for retakes. Use the time between attempts to review the questions you found difficult.
