How to Apply for a Thai Driver's License — Step by Step

The DLT application process is more straightforward than its reputation suggests — but it does take a full day, and knowing what to expect at each step makes the experience significantly less stressful. Here is the process from start to finish.

Step 1 — Book Your Appointment

Use the DLT Smart Queue app (available on iOS and Android) to book your appointment at your nearest DLT office. Be aware that queues at popular DLT offices — particularly in Bangkok and Chiang Mai — can be extremely long, with wait times of several weeks to multiple months for a standard appointment. If you need your license sooner, many license assistance services offer access to express queues that significantly reduce the wait time. This is one of the more practical reasons to consider using an agent even if you plan to handle the rest of the process yourself.

Step 2 — Submit Your Documents

Arrive at the DLT office with your full document set and submit them at the counter for verification. Staff will check that everything is in order before proceeding. If any document is missing or incorrect, you will typically need to return another day.

Step 3 — Physical Fitness Tests

All applicants must pass four physical aptitude tests regardless of whether they hold a foreign license:

These tests are quick and straightforward — most applicants pass without issue. They are designed to identify any significant sensory impairment that would affect safe driving.

Step 4 — Theory Training

New applicants must watch a 5-hour road safety video. Some DLT offices allow this to be done online beforehand through the DLT e-Learning system at dlt-elearning.com. The training covers traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, road etiquette and emergency procedures.

Exemption: Holders of a valid foreign driving license for the same type of vehicle only need to attend 1 hour of theoretical training and complete the physical fitness test.

Step 5 — Theory Exam

The written theory exam is completed on a computer at the DLT office. 50 multiple choice questions, 1 hour time limit, available in English. You must answer at least 45 out of 50 correctly to pass. If you fail, you can typically retake the exam the following day.

Step 6 — Practical Driving Test

Once the theory exam is passed, you will be directed to the practical driving test on the DLT's closed course. This is done on the same day or booked for a follow-up appointment depending on the office.

Step 7 — Receive Your Temporary License

After passing both tests, pay the required fee, have your photo taken at the DLT, and receive your temporary private driver's license. The temporary license is valid for 2 years.

Can I Get Both Car and Motorcycle Licenses at the Same Time?

Yes. Many applicants apply for both on the same day, completing the relevant tests for each. This is efficient and saves a return trip to the DLT.
