Northern Thailand has some of the most varied and dramatic weather in the country — from cool, crystal-clear mornings in December to the lush green landscapes of the rainy season and the warm, quiet roads of the hot season. Every time of year in the north has something to offer riders who know how to work with the conditions.
The Three Seasons of the North
Cool Season — November to February
The most celebrated time to visit northern Thailand. Temperatures are comfortable at 20 to 28°C, skies are clear and blue, roads are dry, and the mountain scenery is at its most vivid. Mornings at altitude can be genuinely cold — temperatures on the high passes can drop to single figures in December and January. Pack a warm layer and enjoy the experience of riding through cool mountain air with clear views in every direction.
Hot Season — March to May
The roads are quieter, accommodation prices are lower, and the warm, unhurried pace of the hot season gives the north a rawer, more local feel. April is the hottest month — regularly reaching 38 to 40°C. With an early start and a relaxed midday pace, the hot season is very much rideable and enjoyable.
March and April also coincide with the crop burning season, when farmers across northern Thailand and neighbouring Myanmar burn their fields in preparation for the next planting cycle. This creates a haze that settles across the north and is worth being aware of when planning your ride.
Rainy Season — June to October
The mountains turn an extraordinary deep green, waterfalls thunder down limestone cliffs, and the landscape takes on a lushness that the dry season cannot match. Rain typically arrives in the afternoon — mornings are often clear, bright and perfect for riding. Roads can be slippery on the mountain passes after heavy rain.
Month by Month
| Month | Conditions for Riding |
|---|---|
| January | Cool, clear and dry. One of the finest months to ride. Cold at altitude — pack layers. |
| February | Still cool and clear in the first half. A wonderful riding month before smoke season builds. |
| March | Smoke season in full swing. Golden hazy light and quieter roads. Temperatures climbing but mornings still good. |
| April | Hottest month. Songkran water festival brings joyful chaos to Chiang Mai's roads. Smoke beginning to clear. |
| May | Transition month with real charm. Heat easing, first rains arriving, landscapes beginning to green up. |
| June | Rainy season begins. Mornings typically clear and beautiful. Afternoon showers becoming regular. |
| July | Regular afternoon rain. The north is strikingly green and photogenic. |
| August | The mountains are lush and dramatic. Waterfalls thundering. Take it steady on mountain roads. |
| September | Rain beginning to ease. Waterfalls and rivers still impressive. The north feels fresher. |
| October | Rains tapering off. Roads drying out. A quiet, beautiful time to ride. |
| November | Cool season arrives. Excellent riding conditions. One of the best months of the year. |
| December | Peak cool season. Clear skies, comfortable temperatures, cold and atmospheric at altitude. |
Best Months to Ride in the North
November, December and January are the standout months. February and early May are excellent secondary windows.
Making the Most of the Hotter and Wetter Months
Riding in the hot season — March to May
The 7am to 11am window is the golden riding period. By midday, stop somewhere good — find a café with a fan, a guesthouse veranda, or a restaurant worth lingering in. Let the hottest part of the day pass comfortably. Late afternoon often brings a welcome cooling breeze.
Riding in the rainy season — June to October
The 7am to 11am window is again the best riding time. Plan to arrive at your destination before 15:00 to avoid the afternoon rain. A lightweight waterproof jacket in your top box is all you need. Mountain roads deserve extra respect in wet conditions — reduce speed and be particularly careful on painted road markings and metal bridge decks.
